I was just listening to some older episodes of Point of Inquiry today and I discovered this episode where they’re discussing exactly what I was talking about. One of the interesting points they made was that human beings seem to move through 3 stages of morality:
- Infantile model. The morals of an infant. We want what we want with no sense of others than “me”.
- Authoritarian, Obedience model : The blind following of authoritarian code. This is religious morality.
- Empathic model: You’re moral code is defined by what’s best for other humans. You’re acting via empathy to others.
